Coolangatta Gold Coast > Gold Coast Towns > Coolangatta
Captain Cook sailed past Coolangatta and the Gold Coast in 1770 at which time he named both Point Danger and Mount Warning. Their names reflected the apparent danger the area presented to ships navigating off the Gold Coast. The beaches of Coolangatta have some of the Gold Coast's best surfing conditions and most picturesque scenery. Greenmount Beach and Rainbow Bay are the Gold Coast's only North facing beaches providing sheltered conditions for swimming. A walk around the point to Snapper Rocks improves your chances of seeing the whales on their annual migration throughout the cooler parts of the year. Coolangatta has a lively night life with a number of good restaurants and cafes as well as night clubs. Coolangatta also hosts the annual "Winter Sun Festival", "Australia's Number One Nostalgia Festival" which features everything to do with the popular Rock'n'Roll years of the 50's and 60's.
