Beach Fishing
Gold Coast Beach Fishing
Some of the best angling fish in the area include Bream, Snapper and Tailor. All of these fish can be caught along the beaches with Bream and Tailor also able to be caught in some of the estuaries. Bream, flathead, whiting and dart are common catches along the beaches and you'll find the Tailor running during the Winter months.

There are also a number of charter operations on the Gold Coast offering everything from saltwater and estuary fishing tours to deep sea blue water sport and game fishing trips. Fish caught on these organised fishing trips include Snapper, Cobia, Kingfish, Amberjack, Sharks, Mackerel, Tuna, Sailfish and, Marlin.

Freshwater Fishing

Hinze Dam Catchment
View Over Hinze Dam
There is some good freshwater fishing on the Gold Coast to be had in the Hinze Dam catchment area and the Albert Valley. Hinze Dam is well stocked with a range of species including Australian Bass (Macquaria Novemaculeata), Silver Perch (Bidyanus Budyanus), Goldern Perch or Yellowbelly (Macquaria Ambigua), Mary River Cod (Maccullochella sp. 2), Eel-tailed Catfish (Tandanus Tandanus) and Saratoga (Scleropages Leichardti).

Fishing permits are required when fishing at the Dam and cost around $5 for a week long permit or $40 for a year. Permits are available from Gold Coast City Council offices and Hinze Dam Rangers.

At Albert Valley, around 40 minutes drive from the Gold Coast there is a recreational fishing park that has a dozen large ponds stocked with thousands of Australian native fish including Australian bass, golden perch, silver perch, saratoga, barcoo grunter, barramundi, sooty grunter, Murray cod and eel-tailed catfish.
It is important that you consult the local tackle shop if you are unsure of the recreational fishing regulations that apply in Queensland as there are serious penalties for infringements. The Queensland Department of Primary Industry is responsible for regulating recreational fishing in Queensland.

Regulations apply to:
  • The size and number of fish you may catch
  • The seasons that you can catch certain fish
  • And the type of equipment you are permitted to use
If you are unsure of the local restrictions contact the Department of Primary Industries Call Center on 13 25 23 if you live in Queensland or +61 7 3404 6999 for Interstate and International callers.
