Southport

Main Beach & Southport, Gold CoastSouthport gets its name from the fact that it was the southernmost port for the colony of Queensland. Today, it is also known as 'The Spit', thanks to a 5km long undeveloped sand isthmus that stretches from Main Beach to the seaway where the Pacific Ocean meets the Broadwater.

Southport is home to one of the Gold Coast's largest shopping complexes, Australia Fair, as well as trendy cafes and restaurants, the Southport Yacht Club, exclusive Marina Mirage boutiques and buzzing nightlife. Southport is also centrally located to the Gold Coast's world famous surf beaches and exciting attractions and theme parks.

The beach at Southport is popular with surfers as it offers good breaks no matter which direction the swell is moving. Conditions here depend on the direction and strength of the wind. Despite its excellent conditions, access to beach breaks is plentiful and there are hardly any other surfers in the water.

Southport is also home to Sea World, one of the Gold Coast's famous theme parks. The 25 hectare marine park offers family friendly fun and it's own resort attached to the park. Sea World is famous for its entertaining yet educational marine life shows, thrill rides and marine based attractions and has been a fixture on the Gold Coast for more than 45 years.

There are some beautiful parklands along the Broadwater providing visitors with great picnic areas and water-lined walkways. Being the largest expanse of calm water in Australia the area is particularly popular for boating and other water sports. Southport's swimming enclosure and pool complex are popular with families.

Southport is also home to the Gold Coast's award-winning Marina, the Southport Yacht Club's Main Beach clubhouse and the Hollywell Sailing Squadron which provides a world class sail training facility and caters to the needs of dinghy, multihull, trailer yacht and other off-the-beach classes. Southport Yacht Club hosts the prestigious Queensland Yachting Association IMS and IRC State Yachting Titles and conducts both offshore racing and cruising.

The northern end of Southport is perfect for relaxing, watching the waves or enjoying a picnic. If you'd prefer to get away from some of the crowds of the Gold Coast, this end of Southport is perfect for that. The beach in this part is dog friendly however there is also usually no lifeguard on duty outside of holiday season so if you choose to swim here it is at your own discretion.
