Surfers Paradise's beachfront has a range of Australian, Asian, European, and fusion restaurants and cafes serving locals and visitors with excellent wining and dining experiences. Surfers is also a popular shopping providing shoppers with the choice of large and modern shopping malls, boutique stores, and weekly beachfront lantern night markets all situated within easy reach. Shopping centres situated in Surfers include The Paradise Centre, the Chevron Renaissance and The Dolphin Centre. There are also some great art galleries, a range of major duty-free stores and souvenir outlets as well as lifestyle centres where you can purchase house and garden items. There are also some great annual events held at Surfers throughout the year including the Gold Coast Honda Indy 300 and the Australian Beach Volleyball Championships. Other activities include free beach volleyball, bungee jumping, motorbike tours, seaplane flights and surfing lessons. An interesting legacy from the mid 1960's the Gold Lycra Bikini clad Metermaids. Today's Gold Coast Metermaids are not only ambassadors for tourism by topping up the metres of tourists, they are an excellent mobile resource of tourist information. They've done a lot for promoting the Gold Coast's tourist friendly image and they've been photographed with everyone from ex Prime Minister Bob Hawke to Wally Lewis and John Farnham.
